Till date I must have told about Cardiff University to atleast couple of dozens of people and still i get messages asking about the university and the place. So here I go with everything about cardiff and the university.
1. CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Its one of the best universities in UK and ranks 4th for its research and development. It has many renowned lecturers and professors. As a student, I must say I have been studying text books written by our own lecturers. they are highly qualified and knowledgable. every department of the college has really good faculty.
There are so many campuses of cardiff university. Like bute building for journalism department, julian hodge for MBA etc. all these campuses are just 6-15 minutes away from university residences.
Classes take place for just 5 days a week being saturday and sunday weekends. Hanndout are supplied in every class and no notes are dictated. It is on us whether to write important points told by lecturers. I recommend you to write and attend all the classes which will in turn help in scoring good marks. another important point to be noted here is that the passing marks is 50 on 100 and its not possible to re-evaluate your papers after marking takes place. 49 marks on 100 will also be considered as fail here. so be responsible if you have accepted the offer letter.
There is no dress code. There are canteens available in college campuses and good food is provided for both breakfast and lunch. university has a very good digital library which has huge range of books, journals and magazines on stock.
Most of the students here are indians and if you are coming from India, its no point bothering about your stay, friends and safety.
2. RESIDENCES
according to me talybont court is the best residences among all the residences. i recommend you to take up the contract of 1 year i.e. sept to sept rather than taking up the contract of 9 months i.e sept to july. I am sure you will enjoy your stay in residences. usually Indian students are put together in same flat or same building. and atleast 2 girls together.
my next preference of residence is talybont south. though building looks pretty old, its always cheerful. talybont south never sleeps. at the same time there is lot of safety, privacy for everyone in the residences and silence prevail during exam times.
all the residences provide basic cooking necessaries like hobs, oven, micowaves, water boilers, toasters, refrigerator, freezers, vaccum cleaners and heaters in every flat. house keeping maintains the cleaniness of residences in an appreciable way. fire safety doors are fixed everywhere and fire alarms also exist. if you face any problem for example fixing water taps, tubelights etc will be done as soon as it is possible without any chaos.
every student is provided with a unique key to access their bedrooms and a person will have to open 3 doors with the same key to enter into one's room. so you can imagine how safe it is to stay in university residences.
when you are planning to fly make sure you are carrying the following.
thick quilt, sweaters, a nice over coat (though its expensive buy a good quality one coz its going to be really cold in here), umbrella (you never know when its gonna rain), rain jacket, scarf and hand gloves.
get all the required spices for your cooking like mustard, elachi ets coz its very expensive here. do also get garlic - ginger paste, dry fruits etc if required. get some maggi packets, ready to eats and powders like chicken masala powder etc if required. if you get a small 3 litre pressure cooker its gonna help a lot. please do not get rice, sambar, onions, tomatoes etc. everything is available here of the best quality. There's a small grocery store called tesco which is just 2 minutes away from residences and tecso extra whoch is like really huge is just 5 minutes away from residences.
Things are gonna seem really expensive in the beginning but you will get used to it day by day. if you don know what is expensive means then just check this one.
price of 1 onion - 60 pence
1 cucumber - 89 pence
1kg apple - £ 2
1kg rice - £ 1.70
6 bananas - £ 1.39
Mc donalds 3 piece chicken strips - £ 3.99
1 200 page ruled book - £ 2.99
1 way local bus ticket - £ 1.50
and the price list goes on.
3. TELEPHONE
as soon as you land here, every grocery store tend to give you a prepaid SIM card free of cost BUT do not take it. beacause they charge a lot for just a minute's call to India. So as soon as land in cardiff go to your nearest following.
a) Carphone warehouse - look for a nice phone which gives contract of both handset along with connection for just £ 20-25 a month and buy it. It will be the best deal if you buy it early. for example: I bought Blackberry bold when i came to Cardiff in sept 2009 for 24 months contract with orange connection by paying jusy £ 20 a month.
If you buy pre-paid SIM (pay as you go SIM), you end up recharging more than £ 20 a month and you wont even own a handset for that money.
b) Orange - it has the best plans for international students like £ 20 a month, 600 minutes free, unlimites texts free etc.
c) O2 - last but not the least, O2 has good contracts too. I have got myself £ 20 a month contract with 900 minutes free, 900 texts free and unlimited landline.
why unlimited landline ?? because I buy a calling card worth £ 5 and call using that which charges me just 1 pence a minute. YES, just 1 pence a minute. If i dont use calling card, i will be charged £ 1.20 a minute.
you can find these calling cards either online or any shop near by. its available every where.
So i recommend you to buy a connection either with more free landline minutes and unlimited landline minutes (you need to call a landline to access that card everytime before calling india) so that you can use calling card to call india at 1 pence only.
4. CARDIFF
a beautiful small city and capital of wales. people are very friendly and very helpful. please do not bother yourself by thinking about racism and stuff beacause there is no trace of racism in wales all over.
Night life is good as you find students everywhere and goodnumber of discs, pubs and restaurents. City centre is the place to shop and cine world to watch your favorite hollywood and bollywood movies.
PRIMARK - I recommend you not to carry lot of clothes because you get everything here at very less price.
Climatic condition seems really cold till march-april and becomes warmer for few days later. It snowed a lot this year and wish it snows when you arrive here too.
there are so many places to see in and around cardiff which you can visit by taking a train or booking your own car. indian driving license is valid for a year in UK.
hope i have cleared everything you have in your mind. if you still have doubts, leave me message. ALL THE BEST !!!!!

nice sumary abt cardiff. especially the info abt telephone was something that i have been worrying abt.. so its better to have a connection and then buy calling cards to call to india, is it????
ReplyDeleteyes, you can buy calling cards as it works out real cheap. its like 1 pence per minute. you can buy it in near by stores or buy online. i recommend chilli card or cobra card.

hey girl...good info..i applied for cardiff for mba..can u help me out givin info abt it.... wht abt job after the course? and part time jobs availability?
ReplyDeleteand is there any chance of paying part of our tution fee while doing part time job with help of it
ReplyDeletehey sharath, thank u for ur complements :)
ReplyDeleteanyways taking up the jobs after mba depends on ur skills and knowledge.. if we go through job sites of uk, we surely find jobs but they ask for particular skills or experience.. if u hav it, u will surely get it..
there are few part time jobs available but it is mostly first come first serve basis.. most of the students who take up part time job find it difficult to cope up wit both studies n job.. anyways its upto u.. if u want one, apply early..
paying a part of ur tution fee? according to me u cannot.. we are allowed to work only for 20 hours a week.. standard of living in UK is really high so it might become difficult to save money to pay the fee.. still u can try cutting on ur entertainment and save up :) but u can use ur money for dialy purpose.. u need not ask ur parents for money every 15 days then :) tats actually a good idea !!
all the best :)
thanks yaar...ur info is of great help to me,, and one more query...im fron computer engineering bckgrnd and im fresher applying....after the mba course with experience its not possible for me na...so does it become tuffer or can i get it..
ReplyDeleteanyways girl!!! thanks a lot...
ReplyDeleteyes, i agree with wat u say.. so u can try for internships during ur course or vacations.. u can try learning few courses that might help adding weightage to ur CV or somethin lik tat..
ReplyDeleteone of my frend is from mechanical branch doin mba as a fresher.. now he has been selected as an intern for nissan automobiles and he might get a job in the same company after training n stuff..
so its upto to u to make the best use of ur knowledge.. and ur welcome :)
which specialization is better to be opted...means financial,hr etc...as per market and univ which specialization may b good and helpful
ReplyDeleteHello girldiary, thanks a ton for all that useful info. I will be joining the MBA course this Sept.
ReplyDeleteA questn from me - How much money would I need to carry in person upon first arrival?
The University has spelt out a provision to open a bank a/c at Cardiff. Money can eventually be transferred but what will the cash-in-hand be required for immediate needs until that time?
hey arjun..
ReplyDeletecongrats on ur admission.. i cannot exactly say how much you could carry.. but i carried £300 when i left.. £100 in cash and £200 in travellers cheque.. i used cash to call back home, to buy food while waiting in airport and waiting for the coach to arrive, for the cab and for tubes if ur running late for ur coach.. on the safer side get £200 in cash..
university will provide everyone with 4 bank letters which u can use to open bank accounts and transfer the money.. but your debit card will take atleast a week to reach you, so till then u need cash for groceries, milk, bread etc..
so I advice you to carry some money and some amount of travellers cheque in the beginning.. once ur debit card reaches u, u can credit both money n travellers cheque into bank..
PS: HSBC takes minimum 3-5 days to credit cheques.
hope this helped,
all the best :)
hey sharath,
ReplyDeletesorry to be replying u late.. all the specialisations provided by university is good.. it mostly depends on how much knowledge you have earned through your specialisation and how well you can put that in real business situation..
3 of my friends from different specialisations got through different companies for internships.. one from operations got through nissan dubai, one from marketing got through vodafone and one from finance got through barclay's.. so choose a specialisation which ur really interested in and givev ur best.. rest will be good :)
hey! girl i got offer letter from cardiff university..last week asn no problem for late reply...u have given lots of valuable info...
ReplyDeleteIm intrested in HR specialization..wht abt it?
And wht is the minimum salary per annum if get the job..as fresher?
thnks a lot GIRL!
hey..
ReplyDeleteI think HR specialisation is good.. my friends had their last HR exams today.. :) anyways i feel its good as far as u like the subject.. and do ur best in the course module..
and about the jobs, u would have wacthed news.. the new UK government is restricting work permitt given to international student.. its cutting down working applications from 150,000 to 24,000 this year.. so you shoudl be really lucky to find a job in UK.. if ur planning to work back in india, i think freshers salary will be approx 30k..
take care :)
is there any chance of job in uk....is it possible...Are there any recruitements rite now?
ReplyDeleteand cardiff is top university na..dont v have any chances..
Ya i read in times..abt tht work permit
ReplyDeleteon wht basis do they gve permit...
if they gve only 24000 only...how would they opt them
I am unsure of chances of jobs in UK untill i find one for myself.. anyways i hear that people do get jobs here especially if they have got work ex of 4-5 years.. as far as i know there's no official recruitment is going on now.. will let u know if it takes place in future.. I agree its a top uni but there are certain things ur employer expects you to have like work ex..
ReplyDeleteI don know on what basis work permit is given but i know that people who have been selected to work for a reputed company are sponsered visas by the company itself..
thanks gal!! for ur valuable info..
ReplyDeletehow is the county..part time jobs etc... and did any of ur frnds get jobs who is fresher with no experience
i got the offer letter..but not able decide whether do proceed or not...
ReplyDeletei heard rules r changing...n market is down..
and after course getting job is it possible?...with no experience in present scenario..
im frm b.tech backgrnd
evry1 is saying univ is good one..but after completing the course...job scenario is unknown
hI GirlDiary,
ReplyDeleteI went thru this blog, u r amazing with your explanations.
appreciate it.
Whats ur name,first of all...?
Anyways My name IS Nawaz Ur Rahman, and i'm in facebook with the same name too.!
I'm from chennai and have finished my B.tech(IT)in 2008. I have 2 years of marketing work experience.
I have lot of Queries,
* Which accommodation will be good, like i
heard from my friend Mohsin who is doin his
MBA in cardiff, told me that court is
good...?
* What r the rules and regulations of uni
accommodation..?
* How about outside accommodation and can i
shift from uni once i've got a contract of
1year or 9 moths, can i opt to stay out of
uni...? how about the cost...?
* How about getting part time jobs in Cardiff..?
Will i be able to manage it with academics,
as i'm an IT student with no
Business studies background..?
* How about the course, is it easy or moderate
or tough...? Is it theoretical like INDIA or
diverse with much real time scenario's...?
* How about the business school staffs...?
Are they good enough, hope so, coz of good
reputation of uni..?
* I have 2yrs marketing experience, is there
any possibility of me landing with a job
after my course...?

cardiff..?
* Last but not the least ,Are u in
facebook..?...lol
And finally sorry for showering on, so many Questions on you...!!
.
Cheers Mate...!!!
PLease do reply...?
ReplyDeletehey sharath..
ReplyDeletecountry is just amazing.. u cannot stop loving it.. part time jobs are like first come first serve basis.. u might find one or u might not as well.. its not predictable though..
I know market is down and you might face difficulty finding a job in UK with new regulations and stuff.. but u can find one in India i am sure..
I have not known much of my friends without work ex getting a good job in uk..
hey nawaz.. thank you for your appreciation.. first thing i remembered after going through your question was my finance question paper.. :) lol..
ReplyDeleteanyways, you seem more curious about the author than info so i shall keep it hidden :P
ok, coming to your questions..
*I suggest court too.. its new and its got huge rooms..
*there are no much regulations except that you should not smoke inside the rooms..
*you can opt out of accomodation anytime.. they might refund some of your fee sometimes and they might not as well.. though its little expensive than private one's, they are really good and safe..
*getting a job in upredictable.. u might n u might not.. it depends on when ur applying and what job etc..
*education is pretty much like india.. but its not worth taking a chill pill like we do in india.. a little hard work will do wonders..
*professors are just great.. i can say that all the text books we refer here are mostly written by our college professors..
*after having a work ex, you have big chances of finding a job..
*there is no campus recruitments but college helps in finding a job..
*facebook?? what's tat.. lol.. *wink*
ThanX a million TGD...!!!
ReplyDeletefinance question paper..? That was hysterical...!!
Anyways, I'm not so curious about the author than info...lol
I just feel, whenever i speak to strangers without knowing their names, like i'm talkin to aliens...!!!
thanks a ton once again...!!

1). MODE OF STUDY / QUALITY OF STUDY
2). PART TIME WORK AVAILIBILITY
3). JOB PROSPECTS FOR FRESHERS AFTER COMPLETION OF COURSE (IN UK).
4). JOB PROSPECTS IN INDIA 4 THE SAME(IF PLANNIN YO RETURN BACK AFTER MBA).

DO REPLY ASAP..
THANX N T.C.
hey,
ReplyDelete1. there is only one of study tat is full time. quality is good according to me.
2. part time work depends on when and where you are applying. it is usually first come first basis.
3. job prospects as of now is weak. it is not easy to find a job here.
4. jobs in india are easily available with starting salary of 30,000 a month.
it depends on how you utilise your investment. if you study well, and score well of course its worth spending so much otherwise no use!!!
THANX.. :-)

Hey prateek, sorry for the late reply.. hope all is well ur side :) as u know job scene is very bad here.. I advise u tat if u have a good oppurtunity to work then work for a year or two.. it will give u an extra weightage with mba or else u can even do mba first but will have to work bak in india.. the degree is acceptable everywhere but u will have to work very hard to get those extra marks for more value.. and as i said the job scene in cardiff is not good.. the pay will be less.. they might pay a fresher some 1000 pounds a month, if ur lucky to find a job.. and u will end up spending about 500-700 pounds a month easily.. i am teeling u this from my personal experience :))
ReplyDeletehi its me Gautam
ReplyDeletebanglore India
now im studying in engineering and im interested in ms in mechanical so plz help me
1. job availability
2. how much subjects for semester and is it 50 for passing
3. notes and text book availability for reading ,
4. which designing software they used for learning because if i know earlier its easy to learn
5. canteen facility for mess basis? because im not interested to cook
6. how much expensive overall for msc in Indian rupees
hey sorry for the late reply !!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I dont have much idea about MS as I am not from the engineering background.
but I can give you basic info. hope this helps.
1. Job scene is very bad as of now. We have a new rule from the nest year that post study working visas will not be issued to any students from the year april 2011. And without work visa its impossible to get job. And I don not any other way of getting work visa other than this as of now.
2. 50 is the passing marks. But I am not sure about how many you wil have in MS.
3. All the notes and texts are available in the library.
4. I am not sure about the software. I am sorry.
5. No canteen facility.
6. In Indian rupees, it might come anywhere between 20-25 lakhs.
thank you
ReplyDeletethen in which way we have to settle in abroad
plz give me a idea what should be to do
ways to settle abroad?? I am trying to find the answer myself :)
ReplyDeletemeans its better to study here only is it right
ReplyDeleteI am not saying that, I am just explaininh the situation here.
ReplyDeleteif we have some experience then it will helps is it right in ms for automotive engineering ,what are basic requirements to get job in that country please give me a information im waiting for yur answer
ReplyDeletegowtham
hey,
ReplyDeleteThe first and the foremsot requirement to get a job here is the work visa permit which will not be issued from april 2010 according to the local newspapers. If you do not have work visa permit then it is not possible to get a job here even after holding work experience for years!!
for msc in abroad its around 25 lakhs if we come back to here how is scope here... any way how that peoples treat to Indians
ReplyDeleteI dont have exact idea, I am in UK still and once i gte bak i can give u the idea abt it..
ReplyDeletehi
ReplyDeletehow much time will take for msc in mechanical engineering for part time i think its not exceed over two years and is it change in duration compare to other university for part time
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI would like to know that scores of class 12th matters in MBA intake or not ? As i have scored 40% in 12th and have scored 58% in BBA!
all are told in uk it is very costly is it right if we compare to usa and at first r u sufferd from home sick,i have lot of dubts but i feel u dont have time how much for ms for mech
ReplyDeleteHey Apurva,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply.. and your 12th marks does not at all is required for MBA intake.. all they ask you is for your BBA.. You can get through.. All the best !!
hey gowtham,
ReplyDeleteYes it is expensive compared to US.. I dint suffer from home sickness.. there are so many Indians here and you feel just like you are in mini India.. and I dont know abt the cost for MS as I am an MBA student..
hi girl...it was informative..
ReplyDeletecurrently im doing my b.com(h) in delhi. even i have applied in cardiff university.is it possible to get thru with 55% aggregate.
and i hav even applied in UWIC,Lincoln coventry, leeds metropoliton, aberdeen and London School of Commerce. which would you suggest?
and i hav started receiving conditional offers also.
but in UWIC the condition is that i hav to pass with 2.1(hons) degree which they describe as second class upper division. but im nt sure of the equivalent percentage in india. jus let me kno if u are aware of.
hi...jus got a conditional offer letter from cardiff university. Bt they are asking a minimum of 60% aggregate in my undergraduation. Bt i heard from two people that there are many people studying in cardiff having secured marks in 50s. Is it stil possible for me to make it to cardiff if i get an aggregate close to 60%(say more than 58% but lesser than 60%). Will they consider me?
ReplyDeletei have applied for MBA.
ReplyDeletehey dear ... that was really sweet of you to guide... could you tell me abt job prospects after UWIC mba? and its scope back in india
ReplyDeletehey im vani from india thinking to apply for cardiff's MBA marketing ? what do u suggest for Me ? is MBA in cardiff accredited ? and what about job opportunities in the university are there any job cells within the campus ?
ReplyDeleteHey
